Marghera Italy

Marghera is a town within the municipality of Venice, Italy. It is situated on the mainland, to the west of the historic city, and forms part of the Mestre conurbation, where it constitutes the southern extension. In mid-2009, the municipality of Marghera had a total of 28,622 inhabitants, 17,522 of whom lived in the main settlement. Strictly speaking, Marghera is the name of the residential settlement, but it is common to extend the term to the adjoining industrial area, whose exact name is Porto Marghera. Modern Marghera developed from urban plans approved in the 1920s, which aimed to provide Venice with a commercial and industrial port and a residential district for its workers. The significant port and industrial complex includes refineries and petrochemical and fertiliser industries, which have caused pollution problems in the area.
