Puerto Viejo De Talamanca Costa Rica

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is a small coastal town on Costa Rica’s Caribbean side in Limón province, popular with surfers and backpackers, and increasingly with foreign buyers and builders. Clear water, coconut palms, excellent surf and a relaxed Caribbean vibe make Puerto Viejo a favourite with travellers. On the Caribbean coast about an hour south of Limón, it’s the main hub between the smaller villages of Cahuita and Manzanillo. The easy-going seaside town is backed by jungle and banana plantations and fronts turquoise seas and scenic rivers. Once a quiet fishing village, Puerto Viejo has expanded quickly in recent years. Drawn by the famous Salsa Brava break, keen surfers have put it firmly on the international surfing map. The town centre is now filled with souvenir and surf shops, bars, restaurants, hotels and tour operators. True to its beachside, Caribbean feel, bikes and pedestrians still dominate the coastal roads. With Afro-Caribbean descendants, European expats and Indigenous Costa Ricans all calling it home, Puerto Viejo wins visitors over with its distinctive mix of people and cultures. Rastafari culture is strongly rooted here, and many Rastas sell handmade jewellery and crafts along the town’s lively roadside.
