Saint Martin is an island in the northeast Caribbean, approximately 300 km east of Puerto Rico. It is the smallest inhabited sea island divided between two nations, a division that dates back to 1648. The southern Dutch part is Sint Maarten, one of four constituent countries that form the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The northern French part is the Collectivité de Saint-Martin (Collectivity of St. Martin), an overseas collectivity of France. Top sights in Saint Martin include the Butterfly Farm, where you can stroll under a tented mesh among hundreds of colorful butterflies, and Pic du Paradis, the highest point on the island, with two viewpoints offering sweeping panoramas. Beaches are a major attraction on Saint Martin, with a total of 37 beaches. It serves as the capital of the southeastern province of La Romana, located opposite Catalina Island. The city is in close proximity to several other cities, including San Pedro de Macorís and the national capital, Santo Domingo de Guzmán. La Romana is a bustling hub for the burgeoning tourist industry, with several local resort spots nearby, such as the beachfront Bayahibe, Dominicus, Casa de Campo, and an increasing number of golf resorts in the surrounding area. A popular mode of transportation in the town is riding motorbikes, as well as taking gua guas, another term for buses.
